About That Lightbulb . . .

At every step in the history of artificial light, many people worldwide were working on similar ideas at the same time. Gas light was introduced in England in the 1790s and gradually replaced the candles that people used to provide light in indoor spaces.

By the late 1800s, gas light was in use around the world for cooking and heating, too. Scientists and inventors were already on the hunt for cheaper, safer ways to provide light. They were on the trail of electricity.

The first type of electric light was the carbon arc lamp. The electric current traveled down one or two carbon rods into an open glass globe. These lights were very bright, perfect for street lights or large public spaces. But the rods had to be replaced often and the lamps were so hot they could cause fire hazards.

The race to improve on arc lighting was intense. In England, Joseph Swan and St. George Lane-Fox were on the case. In the United States, in addition to Thomas Edison and Hiram Maxim, men such as Moses Farmer, William Sawyer, and Albon Man were all attempting to develop (and patent) the first incandescent lightbulb. Incandescent light was created by enclosing a filament, or very thin material, inside a glass bulb and heating the filament by sending electric current through it. The process wasn’t easy. Too much air inside the bulb or the wrong filament material, such as those made of paper, would cause the lamp to burn out too quickly.
